I found this wonderful list by Melissa and Doug for a summer reading challenge. Check it out! <br />

<br />
Summer Reading Challenge for Kids – 2018 Edition<br />
How many books do you think you can read this summer? Set a goal and make a poster to track your progress! Invite a friend or family member to join you in creating a reading goal.<br />
Going on a trip? Find a book set in that location to read while you travel there!<br />
Curl up with a book in different spots inside and outside your home and rate each reading spot on a scale of one to five. At the end of the summer, review your ratings and decide which spot was your favorite place to read.<br />
Read or reread a book with a character you love. Now, think about what that character might do over the summer. Write down or draw a picture of what you’ve imagined.<br />
Read a book that takes place in nature, then go to your backyard or a park and study bugs up close, observe trees and flowers, and enjoy the wonders of the world!<br />
Ask a Librarian: If you don’t have a library card, ask your librarian how you can get one. Also ask about any library perks you might not know about, such as access to CDs, learning games, fun classes, and more.<br />
Build a fort — indoors with cardboard blocks or boxes, or outdoors with branches or a tent — then read a book inside it.<br />
Read a book about a sports hero, then challenge yourself physically by setting up an obstacle course! Use whatever you have available to create a series of exercises — weave through cones or chairs, jump rope, crawl through a tunnel, shoot balls into a hoop or basket — and take turns going through the course with your family or friends. Summer Reading Challenge for Kids – 2018 Edition readbrightly.com<br />
Read a graphic novel or comic book, then use sidewalk chalk to write or draw your own story on pavement.<br />
Ask a Librarian: Visit your local library and ask, “What is your absolute favorite summer read?” Then check out the book they recommend!<br />
Learn about the planets and stars by reading a book, then look for constellations in the summer night sky.<br />
Read a book about kids growing up in a time before TVs, tablets, and smartphones. Brainstorm some of the ways they had screen-free fun with their families. Next time you think, “I’m bored!” give one of those ideas a try!<br />
Read a book that is written like a diary. Create a diary of your own by writing down some memories from your summer in a journal or old notebook.<br />
Dig into a book about how plants grow, then try planting a seed and tending to it.<br />
Next time you’re somewhere where other kids are reading too — on the beach, at the pool, on a plane, bus, or train — look at the covers of their books. Do any look interesting? Add them to your to-read list!<br />
Read a book with a camp setting. Draw or write about the kind of camp you would like to go to (in the real world or a fantasy world).<br />
Field trip! Visit a public library in another town — or a section of your local library you’ve never explored — and read a book while you are there.<br />
Read a cookbook where the author introduces each recipe with a story. Choose a recipe that sounds tasty and ask if it’s something you can make together at home.<br />
Read a book by flashlight, then have fun making shadow puppets.<br />
Ask a grown-up to help you do an Internet search to see if your favorite author has a website with an address for fan mail. Write the author an email or letter about why you enjoy their stories.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4125435979377581855.post-57903433055678717802018-02-13T13:34:00.000-08:002018-02-13T13:40:37.470-08:00The Mock Newbery Contest - The results are in<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">This was my second year doing a Mock Newbery Award contest with my students. We were all very excited to read many fabulous books from 2017. I compiled a list of 20 books that not only did I feel were worthy of the Newbery Award but also many other bloggers and librarians felt so too. So for the past three months my 4th-6th graders were busy reading books. To participate in the contest they had to read at least three books. Many students read more! Some even read all 20! Quite an amazing feat! And they were motivated to do so. I only read 18 books on the list. </span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">There was so much emotion around picking the top three winners that many students were very conflicted, as was I. Each book was special. </span><span style="font-family: "arial";">The awards were announced yesterday. </span><span style="font-family: "arial";">Unfortunately we were all disappointed with the results. This
year turned out to be a very political year for the children’s book awards, and
I guess I should not have been surprised. Four books were picked that we didn’t
have on our list. And we were not the only ones shocked with the award choices. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The Newbery is an award for middle grade books, up to 14 years old. But two of
the winning books are YA, and one book a picture book, therefore the awards
didn’t really cater to the 4-6th grade reading crowd. But some years are like
this.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Regardless, I'm </span><span style="font-family: "arial";">so proud of the
participation this year. Almost all of 4</span>th<span style="font-family: "arial";"> and 5</span>th<span style="font-family: "arial";"> graders
participated along with 10 students from 6</span>th<span style="font-family: "arial";"> grade for a total of 57 MTS students. I couldn’t be more pleased! But most importantly, I feel that the
students really did read some of the best of the best for 2017.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">I hope they are not
discouraged by the results this year and that they will continue to participate
in our Mock Newbery next year.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Even though none of us won
this year in choosing the right books, we all won in my eyes for reading some
excellent literature and participating in the process. Thanks again! And Happy
Reading! <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<i><u>Scar Island</u> by Dan Gemeinhart</i><br />
<i>Recommended for grades 4-7</i><br />
<br />
Jonathan Grisby is the newest arrival at Slabhenge Reformatory School for Troubled Boys. We don't know what awful thing he has done, but we know it is bad. The school is on an island, an ancient crumbling fortress in the middle of the ocean. But because he has done something truly horrible he is willing to take his punishment, whatever that might be. After a few days as he gets use to his new surroundings and learns about the different boys on the island, something horrific happens and the boys are all left on their own on the island to fend for themselves. Are the boys actually in more danger now than they were before the accident? A gripping novel with much suspense, mystery and intrigue. Read how these troubled boys come together to help and learn how to live with their sins of their past before moving forward with their lives.<br />
<br />
You won't want to put this book down!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's the start of 6th grade and all Abigail wants is to be a pom-pom girl. It's the most popular thing to do in school. Abigail and her two best friends have everything all worked out - until she doesn't make the team. Abigail is devastated. And that isn't the worst thing. She isn't in the same homeroom as her two best friends, she doesn't like her teacher, and most important she has been teamed up with the school's biggest loser. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Life in middle school is nothing like what Abigail imagined, she must rise to the occasion and learn about true friendships. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This story is realistic with wonderful dialogue. This is a must read for every young girl entering middle school. Written in short lists, notes and journal entries, this makes for a great read especially for reluctant readers. A story of friendship and doing what is right, I give this book 5 stars! </div>

<br />
Check out this clever middle grade read. A mixture of <i>From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,</i> to <i>Chasing Vermeer</i> and <i>Masterpiece</i>. This is one of the best books I have read this year! A possible Newbery Honor book, I don't know, but I couldn't put the book down.<br />
<br />
Meet Theo Tenpenny. She is a young responsible girl who, un until now, was taken care of by her grandfather, Jack. She lives with her mentally ill mother but now that Jack is dead, all the responsibility lies on Theo. She is responsible for tending to the family's 200 year-old town house and caring for a flock of chickens that lay eggs. And Theo is only 13 years-old. But all Theo can think about are Jack's last words, "It's under the egg, look under the egg. A letter and a treasure." Now how is Theo to survive, pay the bills and take care of herself and her mother? Without Jack's job at the art museum, none of this seems possible. That is until she discovers a painting that looks like it could be worth a fortune. But how did her grandfather get such a painting? It seems odd being that he was a guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now Theo is worried that maybe her grandfather stole it and she is afraid of what the consequences for her family might be.<br />
<br />
And so the adventure begins. Along the way, Theo meets a new friend, Bodhi, a wealthy young girl who has it all. Together the two solve the mystery of the masterpiece and learn a bit about art, history and friendship.<br />
<br />
A great mystery that will keep readers on the edge of their seats while introducing them to the secret world of art. Recommended for grades 4-7.<br />

What drew me to this book were the extremely vividly bold
and bright illustrations. Once I opened up the book and read the story it
helped me to understand a little bit more about the world of someone with ASP
(Autism Spectrum Disorder). While this book can be for any young reader, it
probably speaks more to children with autism or a child who knows someone with
autism. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Meet Tommy, a boy with ASP. Tommy absolutely loves the sun.
He loves the warm rays, the bright color and is drawn to the sun. It makes him
feel good. When he doesn’t see the sun, his days are harder. Embark on a
special journey with Tommy as he looks for the sun in unexpected places. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I almost find the attraction to the sun a bit of juxtaposition
to the book, because you can see Tommy’s attraction to the light and it’s
brilliant rays. To me this is the meaning behind the book. The illustrations
and colors that the illustrator uses in the book convey the feelings that Tommy
has on a daily basis. When the sun doesn’t shine, Tommy’s mood changes. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I feel there are many different ways to relate to this
story. It is a great read-aloud to provide some in-depth discussion about what
this boy sees in the sun and about the neuro-developmental disorder that is
characterized by interaction and communication with others. </div>

Sunbird is a book for everyone or anyone that looks at the
world in a different way. Can’t that be all of us?</div>

Summer reading is upon us. Did you know that if children
read at least five books this summer they will prevent learning loss, according
to a White House study. If children don’t read or engage with stories over the
summer they lose about 2-3 months of reading achievement. The best way to keep
your children reading through the summer is to sign up for one of the fabulous
summer reading programs. Reading is so
important! Here are three of my favorite picture books to check out this

Poached by Stuart Gibbs is a fabulous action-packed middle
grade read for those who love animals and adventures. A sequel that doesn’t
disappoint and you don’t have to read the first one to really get to know the
characters.<br />

Meet Teddy Fitzroy, a 7th grader who is the
primary suspect when a Koala has gone missing from FunJungle, an exact
definition of the name but in a zoo-like setting. Teddy’s parents both work at
FunJungle and all of Teddy’s life he has spent with animals. Why would he take
a newly acquired Koala on loan from Australia. He has been set up and he knows
it but all the proof is directed at him. If Teddy doesn’t find the culprit he
will be shipped off to juvie as a convicted koala-napper. To top off his bad
luck, Teddy is also bullied by the meanest and toughest kid in the middle
school, Vance. Teddy just can’t seem to catch a break, yet his perseverance
prevails.<br />

An extremely well-written story about mystery, animals,

So this is what I have been doing for the past year and a half, working for a very cool new start-up that has created an amazing app for families, connecting them together with books and games. Meet Max, who wants to bake a surprise Passover birthday
cake for his mom. Max is a big boy, he can almost tie his shoes, and he even
knows the four questions for Passover in Hebrew and English. But everyone knows
that baking a cake during Passover is not so easy and one must get really
creative. So Max gets to work, only he really needs the help of his dad to pull
this off. But dad is too busy with Max’s fussy baby sister and so Max decides
to take matters into his own hands. And that is exactly what Max does, starting
with the frosting first, just in case dad makes it down in time to help. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Why is this cake different from all other cakes?” asks Max
at the end of the story. The author ties this question in beautifully with the
importance of the Four Questions during the Passover Seder. This is a sweet and
clever story about baking a cake with lots and lots of matzah as well as capturing
a moment when a young boy realizes he can be independent. The author, Michelle
Edwards, includes Max’s ingenious cake recipe along with a very brief
description of the Passover Story. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Illustrations by Charles Santoso are adorable with warm and
cheerful animated expressions. The illustrations were rendered with pencil on
paper and then scanned and colored digitally. </div>

Max Makes a Cake is a wonderful story that is perfect for story
time during the Passover holiday and welcome in any Jewish library as well as Public
libraries collections too. Recommended for ages 3-6. <span style="font-family: Times; font-size: 10.0pt;"></span></div>

Meet Morris Southall. He isn’t an ordinary 11 year-old boy.
He doesn’t have the use of his legs so he is bound to a wheelchair. But he has
a great attitude and fabulous furry friend, Rollo, a helping dog, who goes
everywhere with Morris. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s Christmas and Morris has a homework assignment to
create his very own story. Morris
creates a story about a boy spy who saves the world from an evil Santa Claus. Unfortunately
Rollo eats the story before Morris has time to finish it, something about
turkey gravy on the paper. Now Morris doesn’t have his homework assignment to
turn in and his teacher doesn’t believe that he actually wrote the story.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Luckily Morris’s class takes a field trip to visit the
Bodleian Library, which is in Oxford, England, where the story takes place. But
this library has something special, a library for all unpublished books. And
this is where the real story begins.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Morris learns about this secret library where all stories
every written but never published come to life along with lost books by famous
authors by a crazy librarian. Morris becomes determined to find his unpublished
story to prove to his teacher that he actually wrote it.</div>

This is a story of adventure intertwined with characters and
stories of many of our beloved authors. Meet monsters, spiders, mad bulls, a
crazy Santa and a crazy pirate. Creatively and masterfully written, this is a
wonderful story that could be a great read-aloud to a class or a chapter book
to share with the family. Can Morris really find his unpublished story?</div>

some dispute over this and some say it won’t happen again until 2070, Jews

sauce and turkey? Or how about sweet potato latkes or cranberry applesauce? </div>

<br />
Kelsey Green, Reading Queen, is there really such a thing? Absolutely. Check out this fabulous early chapter book, recommended for grades 2-4 for girls who loved Clementine, Ivy and Bean and Judy Moody.<br />
<br />
Kelsey Green is a 3rd grader and she loves to read. The principal has just announced that there will be a school wide reading contest and Kelsey wants to win! The winning grade gets a pizza party but if the school reads a total of 2000 books in four weeks the principal, who looks like Santa Claus, promises to shave off his beard. Kelsey's goal is to win both!<br />
<br />
This adorable story is a great read, especially for those who love to read. Kelsey is a funny character with some neat friends. In fact, this is a new series by author, Claudia Mills, which will be showcasing Kelsey's friends in her next installments. Annika loves to solve math problems for fun and Izzy is the fastest runner in the school. Three best friends who love to take on all sorts of<br />
challenges. Look for the Annika Riz, Math Whiz and Izzy Barr, Running Star. But not before you read all about Kelsey Green of course!<br />
<br />

“Press lip, wiggle earlobe, say ‘pineapple’, tap forehead,
pinch nose, don’t sneeze!” These are the different pieces of advice that Anna has
received during the day and must remember in order to not sneeze during her
Aunt Rachel’s wedding. Why? Because she has the very important job of being the
flower girl. This is a darling story with colorful and animated illustrations
that go through the day before a traditional Jewish wedding. Anna, dressed in
her little pink dress, pink shoes with pink flowers in her hair, doesn’t want
to ruin the day with a loud sneeze. But guess where she ends up sneezing, only
the Rabbi knows. Another fabulous PJ library book that not only goes through
the events of a day leading up to a Jewish wedding but has short explanations
of the customs and symbols. <u>Don’t Sneeze at the Wedding</u> is a delightful
story showing the humor of families and the joy of weddings. I loved this book! </div>
